ESL Speaking Activity — Gerunds and Infinitives [exercise 1]
Pair up your students and give them a list of questions.
When they see a question with a verb in brackets, they should complete it using either the Gerund or Infinitive form of the verb.
After completing the question, they should have a short conversation using the Gerund or Infinitive form of the verbs. They can also add relevant details to elaborate on their answers.
For example, if the question is “Can you imagine ________ in a foreign country? (live)”?, the conversation could be:
Student A: Can you imagine living in a foreign country?
Student B: No, I can’t imagine living in a foreign country. I love my home country very much, and I think I’m going to miss my friends and family a lot. What about you? Can you imagine living in a foreign country?
Student A: Yes, I can imagine living in a foreign country. I’m excited about experiencing a new culture and language.
